About Gicleé Prints

A gicleé (pronounced "zhee-clay") is a digital art print that can either be an original fine art print (as in computer-generated art) or a reproduction of a pre-existing work of art (as in a print made of an oil painting.) The word "gicleé" is French for "to spray on" or "to spray ink". The images are scanned and stored digitally, whereupon they are sent directly to a high resolution inkjet printer. The technology provides incredible detail and brilliant color. The resolution (DPI or dots per inch) is actually higher than traditional lithography which results in crisp contrast with rich, intense color.

With the proper surface treatment, artists can paint on top of the image (restrike the image) to produce another individual "mixed media" piece. Gicleé prints can be produced on watercolor papers and canvas, much like the original painting. This gives each piece a similar look and feel to an original work of art. The mediums used are acid free.

Available substrates are 140lb Cold-Pressed Watercolor Paper and 20mil cotton gicleé canvas. All of these media are treated for use with the inkjet process and produce brilliant, velvety color. Life-span estimates of gicleé by third-party testing are currently 35 years for the pigment-based inks. It is recommended that customers treat their gicleé prints the same as if they were an original work of art. It is adviseable, for instance, to never expose any type of art work to prolonged direct sunlight.
