Artist Statement:
My passion is fine art and I specialize in photography and oil painting of landscapes, wildlife, and still life. When painting, my favorite medium is oil on canvas, although I also paint watercolors. I prefer plein air as often as I can since I feel that it is the best way to portray accurate
colors as well as to capture the mood and light. On this web site, you can see my
original oil paintings and gicleé prints, as well as some watercolor work.
In landscapes, my primary subjects are western deserts and canyons. My favorite southwestern locations are in northern New Mexico, the Chama, NM area, and Arizona in Canyon de Chelly as well as in Utah’s Bryce Canyon and Zion National Park. In addition, I have also traveled to Africa, and painted african landscapes of Zimbabwe, Zambia and Tanzania.
My
still life subjects are primarily flowers. I find it especially challenging to capture the translucence of the petals while maintaining the flowers’ colors and their reflected light. I look forward to painting more varieties of flowers, as did many of the old masters.
Another specialty of mine is painting wildlife. My love of animals began early. While growing up on a small ranch in California, I raised pigeons, pheasants, and parakeets. I began to draw them as a child. I was visited zoos and traveled to study animals, learning to capture their unique qualities. My paintings feature North American and African birds and animals. One of my shorebird paintings was selected into the Arts for the Parks Top 100 in 1991.
