About this Painting: All shore birds play a game with the tide – they stay in the wet sand digging for crabs until the last second before the tide comes rushing back into the shore. They are very graceful as they run back up. I wanted to capture the oncoming tide with its bubbling foam and bits of water going in every direction. At the time I observed these birds, it was about 3:00pm, which caused a distinct shadow off to my left. The reflections in the glassy, wet sand provided a second image of the birds straight on. I worked diligently to capture the right values since the reflections are quite different from the shadows cast by the birds.
