About this Painting: Sanderlings are small birds slightly larger than sparrows. They generally hang out in small groups of ten to twenty birds. They are best known for running in the wet sand out to the edge of the water to search for crabs in the sand. They wait until the last second before the tide comes in and run back to the shore. They appear to be playing a game with the tide by running back and forth before it can catch them. They only fly if they are in danger of getting caught by the tide. This painting is of a small group of sanderlings eating breakfast. The long shadows are created by the morning sunrise.
