About this Painting: In 1998 I toured South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Zambia on a 30-day safari. While in Zambia, I rowed a canoe down the Zambezi River for 80 kilometers. I saw many crocodiles and hippopotamuses in the river as well as large herds and lone bull elephants on the land. This painting shows a bull elephant, who was crossing the river from Zambia to the Zimbabwe side of the river. I was able to get within 40 feet of him to take his picture. I camped on a small island, which provided a safe haven from lions but was kept awake at night by the elephants, who swam to the island to forage through the trees. I worked diligently to capture the reflections in the water and the ripples created by the elephants wading through the shallows.
