About this Painting: In 1998 I toured South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Zambia on a 30-day safari. While in Zambia, I rowed a canoe down the Zambezi River for 80 kilometers. I saw many crocodiles and hippopotamuses in the river as well as large herds and lone bull elephants on the land. This painting shows a bull elephant, who is coming to the river to drink. I was able to get within 50 feet of him to take his picture. While going down river, I saw at least 30 bull elephants. This one was intriguing because he stopped and flapped his ears at us as if he wanted to scare us out of his way. I had less than a minute to view him head on since I was moving rapidly downstream. The light on the elephant was spectacular as he crossed through the deep golden grasses
