About this Painting: This painting, inspired by another scene that I encountered at El Malpais National Monument on on the same day as Reflections in the Desert, depicts some of the sandstone cliffs (looking east from the road going south into the park). It was late in the day in mid-July -- with thunderstorms, rain, wind, lightning, and wonderful colors reflecting as the sun went down. I painted several field studies. I would run for cover as the rain came through. Then, just as quickly as the rain had appeared, the sun would return. The rain formed puddles that lasted a few minutes, and the sunset threw a pink cast into the white clouds. I wanted to capture that glimmer of light and the rain falling in the distance.
