"New Mexico Overlook - No Man's Land",
2003, Oil on Canvas, 20 x 30
About this Painting: This painting depicts a large sandstone cliff with patina running down the face, inviting you to follow the pathways it creates. This landscape is in the same area as Reflections in the Desert and The Smell of Rain. It was mid-afternoon in July, and the sky was filled with large, puffy clouds. It had rained all morning so the colors were bright and clear. The sandstone provided a stunning contrast to the black valley of lava flow and small boulders at the foot of the cliffs. I set up my French easel and painted a watercolor study, working to capture the colors in the cliffs and the valley floor of black lava and green juniper trees. The distant mountains on the other side of the valley were 40 miles away, just barely visible at the horizon.
